FAQ

Tire Basics

225 = tire width in millimeters. 65 = aspect ratio (sidewall height is 65% of width). R = radial construction. 17 = wheel diameter in inches. 102 = load index (how much weight the tire can carry). H = speed rating (maximum safe speed rating when properly inflated and loaded).

Speed ratings show the maximum sustained speed capability under proper conditions. H = up to 130 mph (210 km/h). Match or exceed your vehicle’s original speed rating for safety and handling.

Common ratings: Q=99 mph, R=106 mph, S=112 mph, T=118 mph, H=130 mph, V=149 mph, W=168 mph, Y=186 mph. (ZR indicates over 149 mph.) Never exceed posted speeds or the tire’s rating.

Load index is the tire’s weight-carrying capacity. Example: 102 ≈ 1,874 lb per tire. Always match or exceed your vehicle’s original load index. “XL” (extra load) passenger tires carry more weight at higher pressure; Light Truck tires use Load Ranges (e.g., C/D/E). Choose E for heavy towing/hauling if your vehicle calls for it.

A comparative rating for passenger tires. Treadwear (higher = potentially longer life), Traction (AA/A/B/C wet braking), Temperature (A/B/C heat resistance). Not used on winter or LT tires; results can vary by driving habits and conditions.

Tire Types

A balanced, versatile tire for daily driving in warm and cool weather with traction in light snow. Look for M+S marking. For frequent snow/ice, consider winter or “all-weather” tires with the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol. Fortune examples: Perfectus (Touring A/S), Viento (UHP A/S).

All-Weather tires carry the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) severe-snow rating and are built to handle winter conditions better than standard all-seasons, while remaining suitable year-round. They’re a good one-set solution for mild to moderate winters. Fortune note: For severe-snow capability in a tougher tire, see Tormenta A/T and A/T2 (both 3PMSF).

Rugged-Terrain (R/T) tires blend All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain features. They have chunkier tread and reinforced sidewalls for off-road grip and a bold look, but are usually quieter and lighter than full M/Ts—great for trucks/SUVs that split time between pavement and dirt/gravel. Fortune example: Tormenta R/T (FSR309).

All-Terrain (A/T) tires are designed for mixed on-/off-road use with open tread blocks and biting edges for dirt, gravel, and light mud while remaining comfortable on-road. Many A/Ts carry the 3PMSF symbol for improved winter traction. Fortune examples: Tormenta A/T (FSR308) and Tormenta A/T2 (both 3PMSF).

Mud-Terrain (M/T) tires feature large lugs, deep voids, and reinforced casings for off-road traction in mud and rocks. They’re the most aggressive—and usually the loudest and heaviest—so on-road comfort and fuel economy can be trade-offs.

Touring tires prioritize comfort, quietness, and longevity; Performance tires emphasize steering feel and grip, often with higher speed ratings and a firmer ride. Fortune examples: Perfectus (Touring A/S), Viento (UHP All-Season).

Highway-Terrain (H/T) tires are built for on-road comfort, stability, and mileage for SUVs and light trucks.

Fortune example: Tormenta H/T (FSR305).

Winter & Weather

It indicates a tire meets a minimum standardized level of snow traction. Found on winter tires and many all-weather or some A/T models. Better winter performance than M+S alone.

Fortune examples: Tormenta A/T and Tormenta A/T2 are 3PMSF-rated.

M+S (Mud & Snow) is a design marking, not a certified performance test. 3PMSF is independently tested for severe-snow traction. For real winter conditions, choose 3PMSF tires.

Installation & Fitment

No. Mounting, balancing, valve stems/TPMS service, and shop supplies are charged by your installer.

Match the size, load index, and speed rating on your door-jamb placard or owner’s manual. If you’re changing sizes or wheels, consult a professional to confirm clearance, load, and TPMS compatibility.

Your existing Tire Pressure Monitoring System can usually be serviced and reused. Some vehicles may need new sensors (battery life ~7–10 years) or reprogramming after installation.

Care & Maintenance

Every 5,000–7,500 miles (or per your owner’s manual). Rotate more often if you notice uneven wear. Directional tires rotate front-to-back on the same side; staggered setups may be front-to-rear only.

It’s strongly recommended. Proper alignment helps prevent uneven wear, pulling, and vibrations, and protects your tire investment.

Driving style, roads, maintenance, and compound all matter. Many drivers see 40,000–60,000 miles on quality all-seasons. Inspect annually after 5–6 years; most manufacturers recommend replacing tires by 10 years from the DOT date code, regardless of tread.

For the first ~500 miles, avoid hard launches, heavy braking, and sustained high speeds while mold-release and tread blocks settle for optimal grip.

Buying Tips

For best safety and handling, use four matching tires. If you must mix, keep the same tires on each axle and place the better pair on the rear to maintain stability.

If you face frequent snow/ice or steep roads, a dedicated winter set (on separate wheels) offers the best cold-weather traction. Otherwise, consider 3PMSF all-weather/A/T tires for year-round convenience in milder winters.

  • Quiet highway commuting (SUV/LT): Tormenta H/T (FSR305)
  • Mixed pavement + light off-road: Tormenta A/T (FSR308) or A/T2 (3PMSF)
  • Bold look + weekend trails: Tormenta R/T (FSR309)
  • Daily passenger comfort: Perfectus (Touring All-Season)
  • Sporty handling year-round: Viento (UHP All-Season)

Always verify size, load, and speed to match your vehicle.
